Redby Travel, Sunderland

Sunderland-based Redby Travel was first established in 1946 and with the advent of bus deregulation in 1986, commenced operating local services as well as a number of schools/works contracts. At the end of January 2008, the bus side of the business was sold to Go North East, and shortly after the company sadly went into administration. However the small family firm was restructured and is trading once again as Stratton's Promotionbuses.com, specialising in private hire work as well as owning a small selection of vintage buses available to hire for special occasions and publicity purposes.

MFN116R was one of a number of Leyland Nationals acquired by Redby during 1993/94.  The vehicle still looked very smart four years later when photographed in Crowtree Road, Sunderland, on the 13th October 1997.  The bus was originally new to East Kent in 1976 as their 1116.

Vehicles allocated to these duties initially carried full Stagecoach livery with Busways fleetnames.  Looking every bit a Stagecoach bus, Leyland Lynx II J45GGB turns into High Barnes estate on the 1st March 1999.

These vehicles could often be found working South Tyneside College student shuttle services 501/502, and two of the quartet carried appropriate promotional adverts for these duties.  However, on the 27th December 2006, P322KAR was seen at High Barnes working the 14A service to Helmsdale Road.

The bus has been superbly repainted in 1960s London Transport colours and is now used for private hire for weddings and other special occasions.  Seen in Redby’s depot yard on the 4th February 2007 in the company of open top former London Metrobus, GYE533W, which was in the process of being prepared for a repaint.
