On certain days the 26/36 service was diverted to run via Cleveland Road and Ettrick Grove, High Barnes. Go North East ‘Black Cats’ branded Dart MPD, 549 (NK53TKD), is seen in Cleveland Road about to turn right into Ettrick Grove – 28th July 2009. ‘Black Cats’ branded Dart MPD, 549 (NK53TKD), is seen climbing the steep hill on Ettrick Grove, High Barnes on the afternoon of 28th July 2009. This part of Ettrick Grove has never been served by a regular bus service. Go North East Dart MPD, 522 (NK51MKE) carries a white livery with advertising for student travel and is seen in Cleveland Road – 28th July 2009. Go North East ‘Black Cats’ branded Dart MPD, 550 (NK53TKE), seen making a left turn into Cleveland Road – 28th July 2009. Stagecoach’s 18/19 services were re-routed from Kayll Road onto Hylton Road, St. Marks Road and Chester Road on a couple of days. Dennis Dart/Alexander, 32633 (P633PGP), is seen in Chester Road on the afternoon of 29th July 2009. Go North East ‘Doxford Clipper branded Dart MPD, 547 (NA52AXN), is seen in St. Marks Road at the junction with Chester Road – 29th July 2009. Not part of the diversions, but most definitely ‘off route’ was Go North East ‘Red Kite’ branded Scania Omnicity, 5238 (NK56KHF), seen in Chester Road, Sunderland. These buses normally work between Newcastle and Consett, so what the vehicle was doing in Sunderland is a mystery – 29th July 2009. Stagecoach’s 18/19 services were diverted along Ewesley Road on several days, due to the closure of Ormonde Street. Alexander Dash bodied Dart, 32777 (N778RVK), is seen in Ewesley Road on the afternoon of 30th July 2009. This road has never been served by buses except for a school service in the 1970s. Stagecoach North East’s Dart SLF, 35163 (NK56EPO), seen in Cleveland Road on the afternoon of 30th July 2009. This part of Cleveland Road has not been served by a bus service since May 2007 with the withdrawal of Redby Travel’s 14/14A services. After withdrawal from service during 1998, Alexander-bodied Atlantean 290 (UVK290T) passed into preservation and was repainted in its original Tyne and Wear PTE livery as worn when new in 1978. It is seen at the North East Bus Preservation Trust's annual Seaburn rally on the 28th August 2000. Alexander-bodied Leyland Atlantean 561 (MVK561R) seen at High Barnes, Sunderland, one day during May 1981. The mid-1970s Hillman Hunter Estate car on the left adds to the period charm of this shot. Willowbrook-bodied Atlantean 581 (RCU581S) was heading for Sunderland town centre when seen in Chester Road circa April 1982. In this August 1982 view, an unidentified Atlantean/Alexander of the MVK-R registered batch is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, about to turn left into Cleveland Road on the 114 service. Note the poor condition of the road surface – due to the recently-laid tarmac melting during a spell of particularly hot weather! For many years most buses throughout north east England carried the legend ‘Shop At Binns’ on their front or rear ends. In this August 1982 shot, these Alexander and Metro-Cammell-bodied Fleetlines are seen outside the famous department store in Sunderland’s Fawcett Street. The last new buses purchased by the PTE before deregulation were a batch of 65 Alexander-bodied Leyland Olympians, and 665 (C665LFT) is seen at High Barnes, Sunderland, one evening during August 1986. On 23rd July 1983 the PTE’s South Shields division celebrated 100 years of public transport in the town by holding an open day at their Dean Road depot. Two of the buses on display included open top Metro-Cammell-bodied Atlantean 1218 (KBB118D) and preserved Alexander-bodied Atlantean 221JVK, which had been withdrawn by the PTE during 1977. Alexander-bodied Atlantean 276 (SCN276S) shows off its engine at the Dean Road depot open day on 23rd July 1983. The PTE retained several older buses for preservation. Sunderland Corporation Strachan-bodied Leyland Panther 53 (FBR53D) - still carrying PTE fleet number 1853 at this time - is seen at the North East Bus Museum’s open day and vintage vehicle rally on August 25th 1986, in the company of Marshall-bodied Atkinson Alpha 48 (WBR248). On the right is Metro-Cammell-bodied Leyland Fleetline 400 (VCU400T), which was one of the first buses to be painted in the new Busways livery due to take over from the PTE during October 1986. Apologies for the rather blurred quality – not one of my best photographs! Go North East have a small number of Optare MetroRiders used as Staff Buses. These vehicles are used to transport drivers from the company’s Sunderland depot at Deptford, to the Park Lane transport interchange in the city centre. However, when seen on the afternoon of July 4th 2006, MetroRider 417 (P417VRG) was unusually spotted ‘off route’ in Chester Road. Seen at Durham on October 26th 2006 is Optare Solo 457 (T457BCN). The bus is seen working the short-lived Durham shoppers’ shuttle which featured buses painted in this distinctive bright pink livery and ‘Pink Panther’ branding. On August 22nd 2006, white painted Mini Pointer Dart SLF 522 (NK51MKE) departs from Sunderland Transport Interchange. July 30th 2006 saw a major shake-up of Go North East services across Sunderland. This entailed vehicles on certain new services being given their own names and colours. Mini Pointer Dart SLF 546 (NA52AXM) is seen departing from Sunderland Transport Interchange on August 22nd 2006, illustrating the silver ‘Doxford Clipper’ livery carried by vehicles on the new 39/39A service. Mini Pointer-bodied Dart SLF 553 (NK53TKN) seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, on the 26th June 2006. The vehicle had just been repainted in a plain yellow livery in preparation for the launch of the new ‘Black Cats’ 26/36 cross river service and was still to receive route branding. Mini Pointer Dart 554 (NK53TKO) complete with 'Black Cats' route branding, is seen departing from Sunderland Transport Interchange on August 22nd 2006. On the afternoon of December 21st 2006, Olympian/Northern Counties 3833 (S833OFT) is seen outside Newcastle Central Railway Station working the ferry terminal shuttle service. Optare Spectra 3835 (K303FYG) at High Barnes, climbing up Chester Road on the X8 service to Chester-le-Street - 26th August 2006. The vehicle was originally new to London Central in 1992/93, one of 23 vehicles of this type that were transferred to north east England during 2000. On October 24th 2006 Optare Spectra 3844 (K312FYG) is seen at Newcastle Central railway station working the DFDS Ferry Terminal shuttle service. On 24th October 2006 Optare Spectra 3848 (K316FYG) is seen resting between duties in Neville Street, Newcastle, opposite the railway station. East Lancs ‘Lolyne’-bodied Dennis Trident 3862 (W862PNL) seen at Newcastle rail station on the afternoon of October 24th 2006. On the afternoon of October 26th 2006, Dennis Trident/East Lancs ‘Lolyne’ 3877 (W187SCU) is seen at Durham Bus Station with the grand viaduct carrying the east coast main railway line towering above in the background. The vehicle sports the latest version of Go North East livery with additional route branding for service 21 between Chester-le-Street and Newcastle via Durham and Gateshead. Plaxton ‘President’-bodied Dennis Trident 3881 (NK51UCH) works the X8 service to Chester-le-Street when seen in Chester Road, Sunderland on the 16th December 2006. Plaxton ‘President’-bodied Dennis Trident 3891 (NK51UCU), Optare Spectra 3848 (K316FYG) and an unidentified East Lancs-bodied Trident wait to take their turns on the DFDS Ferry Terminal shuttle service in Newcastle’s Neville Street opposite the railway station. The former appropriately sports all-over promotional advertising for DFDS Seaways. 24th October 2006. Northern Counties ‘Palatine’-bodied Volvo Olympian 3899 (R257LGH) in Chester Road on the X2 service between Sunderland and Newcastle – 04-07-06. These Olympians were originally new to Go-Ahead’s London General subsidiary during 1997/98, transferring to north east England in 2002. Northern Counties-bodied Volvo Olympian 3901 (R550LGH) seen picking up passengers in Chester Road on the afternoon of Saturday 14th October 2006. Interestingly, the photograph of Northern Willowbrook-bodied Fleetline saloon 4259 (to be found in my Northern General/Go-Ahead Northern collection) is pictured at the same bus stop more than 25 years earlier! Northern Counties-bodied Olympian 3926 (R285LGH) seen in Chester Road working the 16.40 Sunderland to Newcastle X2 service on the 4th July 2006. Three East Lancs 'Pyoneer' bodied Volvo Olympians were acquired from Nottingham during August 2005. The first of the trio, 3944 (R469RRA) is seen on the 30th April 2006 at the MetroCentre bus rally. Volvo Olympian 3944 seen in Ormonde Street, Sunderland, on the afternoon of July 4th 2006. Alexander Belfast-bodied Volvo Olympian 3947 (H481PVW) at Haymarket bus station on the afternoon of October 24th 2006. The vehicle carries an all-over yellow livery with ‘Bargain Bus’ branding – a recently introduced value-for-money, no-frills half-hourly service using older step-entrance double deckers linking Blyth, Cramlington, Dudley and Wideopen with Newcastle. 3953 (G522VBB), an ex-Arriva London Northern Counties ‘Palatine’-bodied Leyland Olympian departs from Newcastle’s Haymarket bus station on the afternoon of Tuesday 24th October 2006. During 2006, Optare Deltas have replaced the remaining National 2s and Tiger coaches on driver training duties. On the 4th June 2006, 4753 (G753UCU) is seen attending the H.C.V.S. rally at Bents Park, South Shields. On the afternoon of Saturday 23rd September 2006, Plaxton Verde-bodied Volvo B10B 4815 (N815WGR) is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, working the 161 service to Low Moorsley.

293 (E293ETY) was an Alexander-bodied Renault-Dodge S56 new in 1988, and one of a number of Sunderland-based minibuses that sported the dark blue and white version of 'Minilink' livery based on the old Sunderland District colours. The vehicle is seen outside Sunderland’s Park Lane Bus Depot on the 13th May 1990. Optare MetroRider 344 (J944JJR) at the MetroCentre Bus Rally - 12/07/98. 445 (F502ANY) was a MCW 'MetroRider originally new to Oxford Citybus in 1989. Still sporting full Oxford Citybus livery but with Wear Buses fleetnames, the vehicle is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, on March 1st 1999 on the busy 126 service to Pennywell Estate. Former Oxford Citybus (also part of the Go-Ahead Group) MCW MetroRider 447 F504ANY ended its days with Go North East as a Staff Shuttle Bus. At the time this photo was taken (1st August 1998) work to construct the new Park Lane transport interchange had only just commenced and bus services were departing from temporary stops in the surrounding side streets. On the 10th July 1997, Coastline’s open top Leyland Atlantean 3285 (RCN111N) is seen outside the Bridges Shopping Centre, Sunderland, publicising the Prince’s Youth Business Trust. The Park Royal-bodied vehicle was originally new in 1974 to Northern’s Gateshead & District subsidiary, transferring to the main Northern fleet in 1976. Seen shortly after withdrawal from service, having been bought for preservation, is Bristol VR 3401 (JPT901T) at the MetroCentre Bus Rally - 12/07/98. During the early to mid-80s, many of Northern's buses operating on local services within Tyne and Wear were outshopped in Tyne & Wear PTE livery and Bristol VR 3401 has been restored in these colours. The location is the North East Bus Preservation Society's Seaburn Rally - 27/08/01. VFM Buses Roe-bodied Atlantean 3465 (AUP365W) pictured outside Gateshead Interchange - 28/02/98 3501 (UTN501Y) was the very first Mk 2 MCW Metrobus new to Northern and the National Bus Company in June 1983, and is now preserved. The bus is seen here at the N.E. Bus Preservation Society's 2000 Seaburn Rally, only a few days after coming straight out of service with Go Wear Buses. Former London MCW Metrobus 3516 (BYX218V) inside Park Lane depot on the 15th July 1997. 3516 at Sunderland Central Bus Station on the 10th November 1997. During 1981, Northern acquired ten of these coach-seated Leyland 'Atlanteans' with Alexander bodies from Tyne and Wear PTE. Seventeen years later, when seen here at Newcastle’s Haymarket Bus Station on the 27th March 1998, 3530 (EJR130W) was still giving sterling service for Go-Ahead Northern’s ‘Coastline’ subsidiary. In the final couple of years before the old Park Lane bus station and depot sites were closed, Sunderland’s allocation of vehicles was larger than the number of buses that could be housed in the depot – this due to closure of the Philadelphia garage. Consequently, Sunday visits to Park Lane could always guarantee good photo opportunities as the overspill of buses usually occupied large parts of the adjoining bus station. When photographed on August 17th 2006, 14655 (C655LFT), an Alexander-bodied Leyland Olympian originally new to Tyne & Wear PTE in 1986, was by far the oldest bus operating out of Stagecoach's Sunderland depot. The vehicle is seen in Vine Place, Sunderland, working the 11 service to Grangetown. Another view of Olympian 14655, this time at the 2006 Seaburn rally. Over the years, most of this batch of vehicles received various modifications to their lower front panels, but 14655 remained remarkably original and unmodified right up to its withdrawal in December 2006. The bus is now part of the North East Bus Preservation Trust’s collection. 14672 (H672BNL) is a Northern Counties Palatine-bodied Leyland Olympian - one of ten buses of this type originally new to Busways in 1990. The vehicle is seen at Sunderland's Transport Interchange on August 22nd 2006. Olympian 14672 (H672BNL) heads down Hylton Road towards Sunderland City Centre on the afternoon of December 23rd 2006. It came as a major surprise when this Leyland Lynx II was transferred to Stagecoach’s Sunderland depot towards the end of 2005, Sunderland having withdrawn all their own Lynxes several years earlier. New to Cleveland Transit in 1992, 29629 (K629YVN) was one of a batch of nine Lynxes that were fitted with powerful Volvo engines rather than the usual Cummins L10 unit. The bus is seen here picking up passengers in Fawcett Street, Sunderland on 11th April 2007. A722UOE is a former West Midlands Mk.2 MCW Metrobus of the City Sightseeing fleet, seen on display at the N.E. Bus Preservation Trust's 2006 Seaburn rally. These open top tour buses are maintained and housed at Stagecoach's Slatyford depot in Newcastle on behalf of City Sightseeing, hence the vehicle having two different fleet numbers. On the 26th October 2006 Gardiners of Spennymoor's Optare Metrorider J942JJR is seen approaching Durham city centre. The bus was originally new to Go-Ahead Northern in 1991 as fleet number 342. WIB7806 is a Plaxton ‘Paramount 3500 Mk.III’ bodied DAF owned by Griersons of Fishburn. The coach is seen passing the City of Sunderland College’s Bede Centre in Durham Road on the afternoon of January 13th 2007. J254BHH is a Mellor-bodied Mercedes-Benz 609D of Lemington-based Palmer’s Coaches. The vehicle is seen in Prudhoe Place, Newcastle on the afternoon of December 21st 2006. 6MPT is a Leyland Leopard fitted with a Plaxton Highway body. The vehicle was new in 1963 to Stanhope Motor Services, and in later life also operated for Eden, West Auckland and Stevensons of Uttoxeter. Seen at the 1997 MetroCentre rally carrying SMS livery. This former Gardiners of Spennymoor Ford Thames Trader with rare Burlingham 'Gannet' body was converted to a caravan in later life. 8666PT is seen at the 1992 annual Seaburn rally. Abbey Coaches’ unusual ex-British Airways Van Hool A308 Intergral, YIW5672, seen at the 2007 MetroCentre rally. Former London Transport RT LLU710 seen in use as a mobile café at the Seaburn Recreation Ground, Sunderland – 14th June 1998 This Park Royal-bodied AEC Monocoach was being used as a mobile publicity vehicle for the North of England Open Air Museum, Beamish, when seen on the 25th August 1981. The bus was originally new to Northern General Transport in 1954. A 1986 Auwaeter Neoplan Skyliner of Blue Line, seen on May 13th 1990 about to depart from Sunderland's Park Lane bus station. This vehicle was one of a batch of six Gardner-engined Skyliners used on the London Express service. 571BWT is an AEC Relience fitted with Duple ‘Brittania’ coachwork. The vehicle was originally new to Fearns of Dodsworth in 1962 and later also operated for Cadmans Coaches of Thorne. When seen here at the 1991 HCVS Tyne-Tees Run event, the coach had been preserved by an employee of Bond Bros and painted in that fleet’s colours. Bond Bros’ Roe-bodied Atlantean PRH248G seen while participating in the 1991 HCVS Tyne-Tees Run in torrential rain. The vehicle was originally new to Hull Corporation in 1968. A regular at rallies in north east England for a number of years during the late 1980s and early ‘90s was this Karrier BF fitted with a 14-seat Plaxton body. BVH157A (later re-registered OSK831) dates from 1957 and was originally purchased by a Leeds proprietor carrying the registration 6666U. The vehicle also served as church transport for many years before being bought for preservation in 1985. Here she is pictured at the Rover P4 Club’s vintage vehicle rally at Seaburn in 1990. Stagecoach Kingston Upon Hull’s former Tyne & Wear PTE/Busways Alexander-bodied Olympian 931 (C621LFT), back in it’s native north east England at the 1999 MetroCentre rally. HTC661 was a 1947 Bedford OB of the now defunct Calvary Coaches fleet of Washington. Pictured at the N.E. Bus Preservation Society's 1993 Seaburn rally, the coach was thought to be the oldest Bedford still in regular use as a PSV. The previous year, Calvary's entrant in the annual Seaburn rally was GUP647H - a 1969 Plaxton Derwent-bodied AEC Relience, which had recently been acquired from its original owner, OK Motor Services. In this September 1988 view of Northern’s Park Lane bus depot, Sunderland, two visiting coaches keep company with a Mk.1 Leyland National. Seen at Park Lane bus station, Sunderland, on July 20th 1997 was Harrogate-based Expert Coach Travel's F855XJX - a Plaxton-bodied Volvo B10M. Seen at the 1993 H.C.V.S. rally at South Shields, was this 1968 ex-Kingston-on-Hull Corporation Roe-bodied Leyland Atlantean owned by Fairley's of Spennymoor, County Durham. An Optare StarRider of the now defunct George Bell fleet of Sunderland, seen in Chester Road on the afternoon of March 1st 1999. F911YWY was originally new to London Central in 1988. On the 22nd February 1999, this Caetano-bodied Volvo B6 of the Godson’s fleet of Leeds was photographed quite a way from its native Yorkshire home, parked outside a house on High Barnes Estate, Sunderland. Hartlepool Transport’s Plaxton Paramount-bodied Volvo B10M, HDZ8683, seen on private hire outside Sunderland’s Crowtree Leisure Centre on October 13th 1997. This Leyland National 2 of the short-lived HMB Buses fleet of Gateshead is seen at the MetroCentre bus rally on the 12th July 1998. VBG120V was originally new in 1980 to Merseyside PTE. Kavanagh & Sons Setra ‘S415HD Top Class’ 04-O-11 Lothian Region Transport Alexander-bodied Leyland Atlantean, 374 (SSF374H), seen in Edinburgh on the 19th August 1981 861 (JSC861E) was one of eight 1967 Leyland Atlanteans that were refurbished by Lothian Region Transport for use on the Edinburgh city tour and the service to Turnhouse Airport. Mellor-bodied Iveco TurboDaily N117TCN at the 1998 MetroCentre Bus Rally. The vehicle was purchased new by North Rider in 1996.

This 1959 Plaxton-bodied AEC Relience 129DPT gave over 20 years service with OK. After withdrawal it was preserved and is seen here at Gypsies Green Stadium, South Shields after participating in the 1996 HCVS Tyne Tees Run. In 1978 OK purchased three former Southdown Northern Counties-bodied Leyland PD3/4s. BUF279C is seen here on the 25th August 1986 at Leam Lane, operating a special service between Heworth Metro and Bowes Railway via the North East Bus Museum. Park Royal-bodied AEC Regent V PFN858 at Leam Lane on August 25th 1986. RFR424P was a former Ribble ECW-bodied Leyland Atlantean dating from 1976. It is seen inside Sunderland's old central bus station on the 20th January 1998, about to depart for New Lambton on the 163 service. Ex-Kelvin Scottish Alexander 'Y-Type'-bodied Leyland Leopard GMS279S, pictured in Crowtree Road, Sunderland. 02-12-97. Former McMenemy, Ardrossan (A1 Service) Alexander-bodied Atlantean TSD611S seen at the North East Bus Preservation Society's Seaburn Rally. 25-08-97. Metro Cammell-bodied Atlantean YNL208V was originally new to Tyne and Wear PTE in 1979, passing to Northern in 1983. When seen here at the 1997 annual Seaburn rally, the vehicle had been transferred to the OK fleet which was by now part of the Go-Ahead Group. Former London MCW Metrobus BYX247V seen at Gateshead Transport Interchange on the 28th February 1998. Another vehicle to be transferred to OK from the main Go-Ahead Northern fleet was this 1980 Roe-bodied Atlantean. 3471 (AUP371W) is seen at the 1997 MetroCentre Bus Rally. The Duple 300 service bus body was never all that common, only being produced for a short period towards the the end of Duple's existense. E107DJR was a Volvo B10M previously operated by Gypsy Queen, Langley Park. The vehicle is seen outside Newcastle's Eldon Square bus station on the 27th March 1998. On the 28th June 1998, this Duple 320-bodied DAF, G702AEF, was seen at Park Lane bus station, Sunderland.

This AEC Matador was originally new to the Royal Air Force in 1944 as a radar tractor. It was acquired by United in the early 1970s for use as a tow truck, and fitted with a new coach-built body in 1973, which included the fitting of a Bristol RE-style lower front panel. The vehicle is now preserved and is seen at the 2006 H.C.V.S rally at Bents Park, South Shields. ECW-bodied Bristol L5G, HHN202, seen at the 1999 MetroCentre bus rally. The vehicle was originally new to United subsidiary Bells of Westerhope in 1947. Then after spending some time with United between 1951 and 1959, the vehicle was transferred to the company’s Durham District Services subsidiary, in whose livery it is now preserved. This former Eden Bus Services Leyland National 3502 (RJI5344) joined United following the acquisition of the Eden business by North East Bus Ltd. Originally KJD527P, the vehicle was new to London Transport in 1976. By July 31st 1997 when seen here at Sunderland's Park Lane bus station, the bus had been converted to single door configuration and a set of coach seats fitted. During 1985 United purchased this ECW-bodied Leyland-DAB Tiger Cub for evaluation as possible replacement for the company’s standard small single decker, the Bristol LH. However, 1500 (B500MPY) remained unique, and in 1990 was transferred to United’s newly-formed Tees and District subsidiary, in whose livery it is seen here while participating in that year’s H.C.V.S. Tyne-Tees Run. Ex-London & Country Plaxton 'Paramount'-bodied Leyland Tiger 1333 (A117EPA) at Sunderland's Park Lane bus station. 29-06-97 In 1977 this Marshall-bodied Bristol LHS, 1452 (NDL769G) was purchased by United from Southern Vectis. Former 'Tracky' Leyland Olympian A653OCX seen departing from Sunderland Transport Interchange on the afternoon of August 22nd 2006. Eight Leyland Titans were acquired during 2004, although most were sold on after only a year. NUW668Y was the oldest of Redby’s last two remaining Titans when seen here in Fawcett Street, Sunderland, on 15th August 2006. The vehicle was originally new to London Transport in 1983 as their T668, but latterly saw service with Stagecoach Transit and Stagecoach Busways. On Saturday 27th May 2006, Leyland Titan A944SYE is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, on the 14A service. The vehicle was originally new to London Transport in 1983 as their T944, but came to Redby via Stagecoach Fife. The longer version of the Leyland Olympian chassis fitted with ECW coach body is now quite a rare beast. These luxurious double deckers were originally purchased by several National Bus Company fleets during the 1980s for use on commuter express services into London, but Redby’s A260YEP saw much more mundane duties on schools contracts and bus service work. This impressive vehicle is seen turning into High Barnes estate while working the 09.30 14A service from Helmsdale Road to Docks on May 17th 2006. Alexander-bodied Olympian E221WBG seen in Chester Road on the afternoon of July 3rd 2006. The vehicle was new to Merseybus in 1988 but was latterly with Northern Blue, whose livery it continued to carry until February 2007. Optare Solo, R13DBY, seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, making a rare appearance on the 14A service - Saturday 26th August 2006. A regular performer on the 14/14A services was Plaxton Pointer-bodied Volvo B6 L608WWK. The bus is seen in Chester Road on Friday 25th August 2006, sporting an all-over advert promoting Newcastle Vipers Ice Hockey Club. During December 2005, three brand-new Dart SLFs were purchased, ousting the last of the remaining Mk.1 Leyland Lynxes from the Redby fleet. Two of these vehicles carry 'Mini Pointer' bodies, while NK55KBU - seen here on July 4th 2006 working the 140 service to Doxford International Business Park - is the longer version of the Dart, fitted with 'Pointer 2' bodywork. 'Mini Pointer' Dart NK55RUV at High Barnes - Saturday 26th August 2006. On August 28th 2006, 'Mini Pointer' Dart NK55RUW is seen taking a short break between duties on the 558 service at the Seaburn terminus outside the recreation ground. During September 2006, four Optare Excel low floor buses were acquired, three of these coming from East Thames Buses, while the fourth was latterly with Raddoneur of Wallasey. These vehicles could often be found working South Tyneside College student shuttle services 501/502, and two of the quartet carried appropriate promotional adverts for these duties. However, on the 27th December 2006, P322KAR was seen at High Barnes working the 14A service to Helmsdale Road. Optare Excel P325NHJ rounds the tight bend into Killingworth Drive at High Barnes, Sunderland, while operating service 14 – Saturday 4th November 2006. Star acquisition during 2006 was former London Routemaster RML2546 (JJD546D). The bus has been superbly repainted in 1960s London Transport colours and is now used for private hire for weddings and other special occasions. Seen in Redby’s depot yard on the 4th February 2007 in the company of open top former London Metrobus, GYE533W, which was in the process of being prepared for a repaint. The vehicle still looked very smart four years later when photographed in Crowtree Road, Sunderland, on the 13th October 1997. The bus was originally new to East Kent in 1976 as their 1116. This former Fife Scottish Leyland National 2, RSG819V, is seen outside Sunderland's Crowtree Leisure Centre on 13th November 1998. L83CNY was one of two Marshall-bodied Volvo B6s acquired from Bebb, Llantwit Fardre in 1996. When seen here on November 10th 1997, the bus had recently been repainted in this rather drab blue livery in preparation for the application of an all-over advertisment. On December 2nd 1997, Leyland Lynx KAZ2753 (originally D340LSD) takes a break in Crowtree Road prior to operating the 133 service to Doxford Park. The vehicle was originally new to Dodds of Troon in August 1986. N670VUP was one of a pair of Alexander 'Dash'-bodied Volvo B6s purchased new by Redby in 1995. On January 20th 1998 (just a few months before being sold to Go North East) the bus is seen in Crowtree Road operating service 190 to Castletown. From the 12th July 1998, Redby commenced operating several Stagecoach Busways services on their behalf in a franchise agreement. Vehicles allocated to these duties initially carried full Stagecoach livery with Busways fleetnames. Looking every bit a Stagecoach bus, Leyland Lynx II J45GGB turns into High Barnes estate on the 1st March 1999. Another Redby vehicle to carry Stagecoach colours was Marshall-bodied Volvo B6, L84CNY, seen here at Sunderland's Central Bus Station on August 1st 1998. By the end of 1999, the strict requirement for Redby vehicles operating on Busways franchised services to be painted in Stagecoach livery was relaxed. While some buses received full repaints, others such as KAZ2751 (originally D573LSJ) seen here, simply had their orange and blue Stagecoach stripes painted out in black and ‘Redby Bus Company’ fleetnames added. Originally new to Youngs of Ayr (AA Motor Services) in 1986, this early Leyland TL11-engined Lynx is pictured operating service 14A at High Barnes on November 10th 1999. Leyland Lynx II J45GGB seen at the Redby bus depot on the 20th February 2000. B360LSO at High Barnes, Sunderland on the 21st September 2005. This former Scottish Bus Group Alexander-bodied Leyland Olympian was one of two buses of this type to join the Redby fleet during 2004. However, both vehicles have now been sold on for further service elsewhere. Ex-Stagecoach Transit Leyland Lynx F605UVN seen in Chester Road, Sunderland on the 21st September 2005. This vehicle was one of two Lynxes in the fleet to carry all-over advertising for Durham County Cricket Club who are sponsored by Redby. A657OCX is one of two ECW-bodied Leyland Olympians that were acquired by Redby during the summer of 2005 from Yorkshire Traction. The vehicle is seen at High Barnes on September 21st 2005. On the afternoon of March 6th 2007, Leyland Olympian/ECW A657OCX is seen at High Barnes operating the 14A service to Sunderland Docks. In this offside view of Optare Excel P329NHJ, the advert for South Tyneside College is shown to good effect. The bus is seen in Athenaeum Street, Sunderland, working Metro replacement service 901 to South Hylton – 11th April 2007. Ford Transit minibus NV53YVB seen in Athenaeum Street, Sunderland – 11th April 2007. Recently repainted Titan NUW668Y shows off its smart new blue livery as it turns into Fawcett Street, Sunderland, on Metro replacement duties – 11th April 2007. In complete contrast, Titan A944SYE was looking very down at heel when seen working the Metro replacement service in Sunderland’s John Street – 11th April 2007. Several mobile publicity buses were maintained and housed by Redby on behalf of the National Postcode Lottery. Languishing at the back of the depot and just visible from the main road was Leyland Titan A613THV, which had previously been owned by Redby before taking on its new role – 28th April 2007. On Saturday 26th May 2007, Mini Pointer’ Dart NK55RUV with newly fitted electronic destination display and red skirt, is seen at the Cleveland Road/Ormonde Street junction on the 14 service. The 14/14A services have since been withdrawn and buses no longer serve this section of Cleveland Road. KX07OOW was one of a pair of brand new Alexander-Dennis Enviro 200s acquired to operate Redby's new 9/99 Hylton Castle circular services. The vehicle is seen in Hylton Road, Sunderland, on Saturday 2nd June 2007. On the afternoon of Monday 23rd July 2007, ex-Go North East Optare Sigma-bodied Dennis Lance, L482CFT, is seen in Green Terrace, Sunderland.

Initially, a fleet of ex-Greater Manchester PTE Leyland Nationals were operated, but after only a couple of years, were replaced with a very interesting assortment of Leyland Leopards, AEC Reliences and ECW bodied Bristol REs. On the 13th May 1990, dual-purpose seated Bristol RELL YFM270L approaches Sunderland’s old Central Bus Station on service 6 from South Shields. The vehicle was originally new to Crosville in 1973 as fleet no. ERG270. One of six Leyland Leopards fitted with Plaxton Derwent II bodies in 1991/92, replacing Duple Dominant or Willowbrook 003 coachwork. HIL2144 is seen in Crowtree Road, Sunderland on the 29th August 1996. This vehicle was originally new to Northern General in 1982 as their LFT92X. Former Safeguard of Guilford Duple Dominant bus-bodied Leyland Leopard NPD689W, pictured in Sunderland’s Crowtree Road on the 29th August 1996. Plaxton 'Derwent'-bodied Leyland Leopard MTE14R seen in Sunderland on the 1st October 1996. It was one of seven buses of this type that were purchased in 1994 from Darlington Transport, but was originally new to Lancashire United in 1976. This vehicle also saw service with Busways’ Favourite Services division as their 1845. Another of the Leyland Leopards that were rebodied by Plaxton in 1991/92. HIL2142 is seen in Crowtree Road on the 3rd March 1997 and was originally Northern General’s VPT169R – a 1977 Duple Dominant bodied coach. On the 13th October 1997, KRN112T is seen on private hire in Sunderland. This Duple Dominant II-bodied Leyland Leopard joined the Hylton Castle fleet in 1992 from Brownrigg of Egremont, but was originally new to Ribble in 1979. TJI1683 (originally UCX429X) is a Plaxton 'Supreme VI GT'-bodied Volvo B10M which was new to Longstaff of Mirfield in 1982. The vehicle is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland on March 30th 2006.

The vast majority of photos in this collection were taken during 1997/98, although I have also included a few pictures taken prior to the Stagecoach take-over. Stagecoach first commenced Magic Bus services in Newcastle on the 28th April 1997, providing a low fare alternative to the standard service. On the 27th March 1998 Alexander bodied Leyland Atlantean 363 (AVK183V) is seen picking up passengers in Blackett Street, Newcastle. On the 12th July 1998 Leyland Lynx 102 (F102HVK) is seen at the MetroCentre Coach Park, taking a break between duties on service 33. One of the last vehicles to retain the yellow Busways livery was Lynx 104 (F104HVK). The bus is seen in Crowtree Road, Sunderland on the 1st August 1998. Leyland Lynx 114 (F114HVK) in Brougham Street, Sunderland on the 2nd December 1997. 401 (VCU401T) was one of a batch of 40 Metro Cammell-bodied Leyland ‘Fleetlines’ to enter service with Tyne & Wear PTE in Sunderland during 1979. The vehicle is seen departing from Sunderland’s old Crowtree Road Bus Station on Sunday 13th May 1990. Alexander bodied Leyland Olympian 619 (C619LFT) pictured in Newcastle's Blackett Street on the 27th March 1998. On the 25th August 1986, South Shields Busways Alexander-bodied Olympian 647 (C647LFT) is seen in the company of United Bristol FLF Lodekka driver training bus JNU989D at the N.E. Bus Museum's open day rally. Twenty years on, housing now occupies the site where these two vehicles were parked. Alexander-bodied Olympian 652 (C652LFT) and Favourite Services Dart 1715 (K715PCN) are seen in Vine Place, Sunderland on December 1st 1997. On the 13th October 1997 Olympian 653 (C653LFT) is seen in Fawcett Street, Sunderland on service 27 to Hylton Castle. Northern Counties bodied Olympian 668 (H668BNL) in Fawcett Street Sunderland on the 10th November 1997. 1995 saw the addition of 40 brand new Alexander bodied Volvo Olympians to the Busways fleet. On the 13th November 1998, 731 (N731LTN) is seen inside Sunderland's old Central Bus Station about to depart for South Shields on the E1 service. Fleetline/Alexander 822 (OCU822R) outside Crowtree Leisure Centre, Sunderland on the 2nd December 1997. For more photos of the Alexander-bodied Fleetlines see my Busways Fleetline collection. Several batches of Alexander PS bodied Scania single-deckers were supplied to Busways between 1988 and 1991 for operation in Newcastle. 903 (F903JRG) is seen in 1990 at the H.C.V.S. rally, South Shields, carrying promotional branding for service 100 between central Newcastle and the Gateshead MetroCentre. 1101 (R101KRG) was the first of a batch of 26 Alexander ALX300 bodied Dennis Dart SLFs. The vehicle is seen in Fawcett Street, Sunderland, on the 10th November 1997 - just one week after entering service. Note the absence of ‘Lo-Liner’ branding which was still to be applied. 1125 (R125KRG) at the MetroCentre bus rally on the 12th July 1998. 1201 (M201DRG) was one of a trial batch of three Plaxton Verde bodied Dennis Lances new in 1994. It is seen in Sunderland's Fawcett Street on the 10th November 1997. Dennis Lance 1203 (M203DRG) in Sunderland Busways livery, seen at the Central bus station on October 13th 1997. Alexander 'Dash' bodied Dennis Dart 1728 (K728PNL) seen in Brougham Street, Sunderland, on the 13th October 1997. Alexander-bodied Dennis Dart 1737 (L737VNL) at Sunderland’s old Central Bus Station on the 1st December 1997. Dart 1762 (L762ARG) in Crowtree Road, Sunderland on the 20th January 1998. Alexander ‘Dash’ bodied Dennis Dart 1782 (P782WCN) and Redby’s ex-Ribble Leyland National SCK697P take a break between duties in Crowtree Road, Sunderland on August 29th 1997. On the 1st March 1999 Dennis Dart 1782 is seen in Chester Road, Sunderland, outside St. Gabriel’s Church. Although not actually carried on the vehicle, fleet number 1801 in the Busways fleet was Bristol RESL ECU201E, which was new to South Shields Corporation in 1967. After withdrawal by successors Tyne and Wear PTE in 1977, the bus spent the next ten years with various small independent operators. In 1987 the vehicle was purchased by Busways, repainted into its original South Shields livery and used for private hire and attending rallies. The Bristol has since passed to a private preservationist and is painted in Tyneside PTE livery, but was still owned by Busways when seen here in June 1997 1828 (GTJ388N) was an ex-Merseyside PTE Bristol RESL, seen here at the North East Bus Museum's open day and rally on 25-08-86. This bus was one of a batch of ten similar vehicles that had just been acquired by Tyne & Wear PTE for service in South Shields and were painted in the new Busways livery prior to the launch of the company at deregulation later that year. Although most REs acquired second-hand by Busways were internally refurbished, when pictured here on August 25th 1986, ECW-bodied Bristol RESL 1828 (GTJ388N) still retained its original Merseyside PTE seating. Newcastle Busways 1842 (LTE488P) was one of a number of Plaxton Derwent-bodied Leyland Leopards acquired from GM Buses during 1987. The vehicle is seen at the H.C.V.S. event at Gypsies Green Stadium on June 6th 1993. Also purchased by Busways in 1994 for evaluation, were a pair of Alexander Strider bodied Volvo B10Bs. 1901 (M901DRG) is seen at the Gateshead MetroCentre Coach Park on the 29th May 2000. On the 20th January 1998, Alexander PS bodied Volvo B10M 2203 (N203LTN) is seen at Sunderland's Wheatsheaf depot in the company of an unidentified Alexander bodied Olympian and Fleetline 837. Volvo B10M 2217 (N217LTN) at the MetroCentre Coach Park on the 11th July 1999. Alexander bodied Volvo B10BLE 2237 (R237KRG) at the Gateshead MetroCentre Bus Rally on the 12th July 1998. The Newcastle-based Blue Bus Services division was famous for its small fleet of Bristol REs. 1802 (TRY118H) was originally new to Leicester City Transport in 1969 and is seen at Gypsies Green Stadium, South Shields, after participating in the 1997 HCVS Tyne Tees Run. 1814 (OWC723M) was one of seven Bristol RELLs that were acquired from Colchester Borough Transport during 1988. It is seen at the North East Bus Preservation Society's Seaburn vintage vehicle rally on the 25th August 1997. 1833 (LBN202P) was a former Southend Transport Plaxton bodied Leyland Leopard. It is seen on the 12th July 1998 at the MetroCentre Bus Rally. This ex-Ministry of Defence Dodge G13, DT19 (D305YTY) was one of several vehicles of this type to join the Busways fleet during 1998/99 for Driver Training duties. It is seen on the 12th July 1998 at the MetroCentre bus rally. Leyland Leopard 1849 (MTE18R) of the Favourite Services division approaches Sunderland's old Central Bus Station in Crowtree Road on the 13th May 1990 - the very first day of Favourite operation of services 13/14. Ten former GM Buses Leyland Leopards fitted with Plaxton Derwent bodies were acquired by the Busways group in 1987. However, when the Favourite subsidiary took over operation of services 13 & 14 from Sunderland Busways in 1990, an eleventh example was bought – namely 1851 (MTE32R), seen here in Crowtree Road, Sunderland on May 13th 1990. Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart 1748 (L748VNL) of the Favourite division, seen at Sunderland's Central Bus Station on the 10th November 1997. 210 (EJR110W) was new in 1980 and spent the first fourteen years of its life based in Newcastle. During 1994, 210 was transferred to Sunderland depot for approximately one year and has been repainted in the attractive yellow, white and green livery of Sunderland Busways. The vehicle is seen at the N.E. Bus Preservation Trust's Seaburn rally - 28/08/06. Also recently restored is Atlantean 268 (SCN268S), new in 1978 and was based at South Shields for much of its life. Looking resplendent in South Shields Busways colours, the bus is seen at the 2006 Seaburn rally. 319 and 338 seen at Sunderland's Wheatsheaf depot on the 3rd January 1997. Also in view is 1863 (ESU263), a Plaxton Paramount 3500 bodied Leyland Tiger of the Favourite fleet, whilst lurking in the darkness inside the depot building is Atlantean 223. Open top Atlantean 1218 (KBB118D) at Gypsies Green Stadium, South Shields, having just taken part in the annual HCVS Tyne Tees Run on the 7th June 1998. The bus had recently left the Busways fleet and was in fact owned at this time by North East Bus Breakers. It was subsequently sold on to an operator in the Irish Republic. Although incorporating an Alexander-style windscreen and lower front panel, this vehicle was actually bodied by Metro-Cammell. 205 (EJR105W) seen in Fawcett Street, Sunderland, operating service 5 to Redhouse on the 29th August 1996. New to Tyne and Wear PTE in 1980, the EJR-W batch of Atlanteans were originally fitted with coach seating and used mostly on ‘Fastline’ express services. However, in the late 80s they were downgraded and fitted with standard bus seats. 208 (EJR108W) seen in Blackett Street, Newcastle on the 27th March 1998. 223 (EJR123W) in Athenaeum Street, Sunderland on the 20th December 1997. 223 at High Barnes, Sunderland, operating service 14 to Helmsdale Road on the 24th December 1997. This was to be the very last occasion an Atlantean was used on this service. On the 3rd March 1997, 287 (UVK287T) is seen taking a short break in Crowtree Road, Sunderland, prior to operating the E1 service to South Shields. 319 (AVK139V) in Brougham Street, Sunderland, about to operate a schools service on the 17th October 1997. 326 (AVK146V) of the Newcastle-based Blue Bus Services division was unusual in that it sported a yellow and white livery rather than that fleet’s normal blue and cream colours. It is seen at the North East Bus Preservation Society’s Seaburn vintage vehicle rally on the 25th August 1997. 330 (AVK150V) in Fawcett Street, Sunderland, on the afternoon of the 10th November 1997. On the 15th July 1997, 334 (AVK154V) is seen in Brougham Street, Sunderland. After withdrawal from service, this bus saw further service with W.H. Fowler, Holbeach Drove. 340 (AVK160V) seen at Sunderland Central Bus Station on the 29th August 1996 while allocated to the Favourite Services division. After withdrawal by Busways the following year, this vehicle passed to Weardale Motor Services of Stanhope, County Durham, for further service. 315 (AVK135V) seen in Blackett Street, Newcastle, on the afternoon of 27th March 1998. Seen in pre-Stagecoach-owned days, Sunderland Busways Daimler Fleetline/Alexander 807 (OCU807R). This shot was taken from the footbridge outside Sunderland’s Bede School (now owned by City of Sunderland College) in Durham Road on the morning of February 1st 1989. 816 (OCU816R) seen in Chester Road, Sunderland operating service 16 to Hastings Hill on the 13th January 1997. 816 basking in the late afternoon sun, approaches Sunderland's Central Bus Station in Crowtree Road on the 13th October 1997. Fleetline 816 seen at Wheatsheaf depot, Sunderland, on the 20th January 1998, two months before being withdrawn. It subsequently passed to Travelux UK, Grays, in November 1998. 818 (OCU818R) in Crowtree Road, about to depart for Pennywell Estate on the 3rd March 1997. On the 13th October 1997, 818 picks up passengers in Athenaeum Street, Sunderland in the late afternoon sunshine. 818 and an Optare Metrorider seen in Olive Street, Sunderland on the 25th November 1997. By late 1997 double deck operation of services 14/14A had become very rare. On 20th December 1997, 818 is seen at Sunderland’s Central Bus Station standing in for a Favourite Services Dennis Dart. This is the last occasion a Fleetline operated on this particular service. Two months later, this vehicle was transferred to South Shields depot, where it continued to operate until its withdrawal in July 1998. 819 (OCU819R) seen at Sunderland's old Central Bus Station on the 18th November 1996. This location looks completely different today. The bus station closed in May 1999 for redevelopment and the site is now occupied by part of the Bridges shopping centre. Buses now use the Park Lane transport interchange. Crowtree Road is the scene again, with 819 operating service 11 on the 10th November 1997. At the end of March 1998, this vehicle was withdrawn and transferred to Stagecoach East Midland, where it gave a couple more years of service. In 1990 Busways handed over the operation of service 14 between Helmsdale Road and Docks to their ‘Favourite Services’ division, initially using a fleet of ex-GM Buses Leyland Leopards and later, Dennis Darts. However, during 1996 Fleetline and Atlantean double deckers from the main Busways fleet could often be seen putting in appearances on the service too. One such occasion was on the 1st October 1996. 822 (OCU822R) is seen at Sunderland’s Central Bus Station. 822 seen at the North East Bus Preservation Society's annual vintage vehicle rally at Seaburn on the 25th August 1997. Two months later, the vehicle was transferred to Stagecoach East Midland along with similar vehicle 819, where they gave further service in the Chesterfield and Mansfield areas. I believe this vehicle still survives today as a mobile classroom/internet access station in the Mansfield area. Just about visible in the background inside the bus station are Busways Alexander bodied Atlantean 330 (AVK150V) about to operate a schools service, and a Go-Wear Buses Optare Excel. 828 (RCU828S) seen in Brougham Street, Sunderland, on the 29th August 1996 - one month before withdrawal from service. 832 (RCU832S) seen in Brougham Street, Sunderland, operating service 104 between Doxford Park and Downhill on the 29th August 1996. This shot of 832 on the 29th August 1996, shows off its distinctive nearside staircase to good effect – for years a feature of Tyne and Wear double-deck buses. When new, these Alexander bodied Fleetlines were also fitted with centre exits, designed to speed up boarding and alighting by avoiding the clash of two streams of passengers using the gangway. However, with the separate front entrance and centre exit layout falling from favour in the early 1980s, they were all converted to single door configuration. Not a very good shot I know, but the only one I managed to get of 833 (RCU833S) before withdrawal from service during January 1997. The location is Chester Road Sunderland on a freezing cold December 6th 1996. 834 (RCU834S) in Crowtree Road on the 2nd April 1997. After withdrawal in May 1998, the bus passed to TRS of Leicester in October 1998 and later, in September 2001 to A.C. Williams, Ancaster.for further service. 834 stands at the Brougham Street bus stop about to depart on the 104 service to Downhill Estate, Sunderland - 3rd March 1997. On the 10th November 1997 834 is seen outside Crowtree Road Leisure Centre in the company of an Alexander PS bodied Volvo B10M of Stagecoach and a Go-Ahead Optare Delta painted in their respective corporate liveries. 834 seen in Brougham Street, Sunderland on the 20th January 1998. This vehicle was Sunderland’s last operational Fleetline and remained in front-line service until May 1998. Its withdrawal marked the end of an era in Sunderland’s public transport history, bringing 36 years of Fleetlines and 65 years of continuous Daimler bus operation in the city to a close. The bus was withdrawn in March 1998, passing to Hennings of Thornley, County Durham. 838 (RCU838S) operating the 11 service on 21st March 1997. During April 1998 the bus was transferred to South Shields depot, where it joined 818 until withdrawal in July 1998. 838 then passed into preservation with the North East Bus Preservation Society. 838 seen making its debut as a preserved bus at the North East Bus Preservation Society's Seaburn vintage vehicle rally on the 31st August 1998.
